Title of business model :

Contract-based direct sales of no-adulterated fresh milk from Dairy Self Help Group to consumer.

The business procedure is outlined as following:

  • Organizing women's group as SHG

  • Providing them with a series of trainings step by step

  • Collect milk from SHG members, ( sampling quality check is conducted regularly)

  • Delivery the fresh milk directly to consumers by SHG members (not by conventional milkman)

  • Providing equipment such as scooter, milk bucket, lactometer, etc  nessesary for this process

  • Target consumer is company's canteen which has regal obligation of CSR

  • Sales is distributed through a bank directly to SHG's and individual bank accounts after deduction of costs of training and equipment.

A serious problem of milk adulteration in Indian market is one of the back ground for developing business model of the Milk Lady Pilot Project. One of the famous and shocking study to reveal actual quality of milk in market is the one conducted by FSSAI (Food Safety Standards Authority India) in 2011. According to this study,  almost 70 % of milk sold in market was not satisfied with its standard. Most of them were diluted by water which may cause microbial contamination. Typical adulterants detected in the study included milk powder, glucose which doesn't exist in natural milk, and detergent which is obviously hazard to health.

There has been increasing attention to quality of milk in market, and consumers are eager to safe and non-adulterated milk. however, it is not yet easy to get it.  Therefore, the Milk lady Pilot Project has been trying to deliver fresh and non-adulterated milk to consumers who need it and support the ladies activities.

Nowadays, you can get lots of news, reports regarding milk adulteration in India through  Internet.  We've picked up some to understand the current status and share views with you.

Why does milk adulteration take place?  It is partly because there is unintentional adulteration, such as  caused by improper management of detergent in milk equipment washing. However, most of milk adulteration must take place intentionally with simple economic reasons:  increasing trade volume of milk, making longer life of milk,  get ting higher unit price of milk.

Based of our field observation at Kashipur area, in Uttarlhand, such intentional adulteration takes place somewhere between producer and consumer.  Producers, in short, farmers do not  make adulteration unless economic incentives are set in their market channel. Even, they are willingly to prepare non-adulterated milk if there are trading system which gives higher prices to that milk. Consumer will probably be able to provide farmers for positive incentives by paying more to non-adulterated. The material below shows our view of milk adulteration.

Milk adulteration can be detected usually by chemical/physical test. The Milk Lady Pilot Project adopts an adulteration test kits for commercial use, although we are sure that our women do not cause adulteration. This is indispensable process to increase consumers' trust to us as a social business.  FSSAI presents an instruction how to detect milk adulteration which can be done at home,

  • Although there is no single definition, a social business can be simply expressed as

   " non-loss" and "non-dividend" business with a social objectives.

  • "Non-loss" means that the business must make profit to maintain its operation, and the company must be self sustaining, instead of just depending on donation or public grant.

  • "Non-divided" indicates that company's profit must be reinvested to the business itself. The investor must not receive more than they invested, and director/staff must not be paid bonus apart form regular payment as market price for professional.

  • Social objectives refer to issues and problems to be addressed in socio-economic development, such as poverty reduction, human right, natural conservation, etc.

  • "Innovation in production/services/operation of business" and/or "Creation of social value by business" are sometime added as a feature of social business

  • One of the most successful and notable social business is Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, which was initiated by Dr.Muhamed Yunes, a Novel Peace Prize winner in 2006

  • Achieving social objectives and at the same time , being self-sustaining organization are the    most important feature of a social business which COATA emphasizes on as a practitioner.

  • Being "charitable organizations" such as NGOs and societies is one of the way to tackle social    issues, and in facts, some of such organizations have realized substantial achievements.

  • However, "charitable organizations" can't but rely on a donation or grant even for its recurrent budget such as staff salary and its overhead.

  • So an organization without sufficient donation has to spend lots of energy for "fund raising"  and consequently can not concentrate to generate outputs. And

  • On the contrary, an organization fully supported by donor for long time is, unfortunately, easily loose its efficiency in operation and may fail to generate outputs by 100 % according to its financial resources provided.

  • COATA recognizes the value in trying to do it with efficient and sustainable manners which are used by authentic business persons in commercial business organizations.

  • COATA, for now, focuses on rural development, particularly through promotion of micro   business by poor women's group.

  • Micro business in rural development could provide cash income as well as job opportunities for poor women. Economic value generated by such micro business could also become a part of source of income for COATA instead of donation and grant from outside.

  • Besides, women are more serious (than men) for getting cash income and eager to take part in business although they face with lots of social & cultural difficulties. COATA sees more visible possibility in rural women's micro business, once they are given such opportunities.

  • Apart from rural development, environmental conservation, particularly in energy saving and renewable energy project is the other area of social business which COATA tries to tackle.

  • Energy has tangible economic value and can directly relate to cost reduction even for the poor. Therefore, it could give better possibilities (than other subjects such as health, education, etc) as profit-making and sustainable business.
